How does science influence your life? Can you think of anything in your life that has been influenced by science (hint: there are endless options)? Are there any hypotheses you have that you want to test? If so, what are they?
This is a good question to get students wondering about how their TV or PlayStation ended up in their living room or how their home ended up with electricity. It's science. It's experimentation. Also the second question could be a great way to get them thinking about science fair projects.
I also think this is a great and deep question for elementry students to go off of. i think you could even ask this to high school students and get a great disscussion. I think that you could say just about anything in your life and it would be right so i think that is great for the students who sometimes give the out of left feild anwsers! Everyone is right with this question and it gets you to think! great job!
I think these are some great questions to ask students for the beginning of the year. I like how you asked what hypothesis they have. I would also ask how they would go about finding out the answer to their hypothesis. Then take some of their ideas and test them out if you have the resources to do so
These are awesome questions for kids to apply science to their lives. I think that it is important to have a connection with what you are learning so you will be better able to retain your new found knowledge.
I love that you are trying to get students to make connections between science and their "real" lives. Authentic science occurs all around us, every day! However, you also should ask students to explain their answers. Otherwise, you may get a lot of interesting answers, but it will remain unclear how the students thinks that their example is connected to science. And, if they follow your hint (which is true), they might come up with a random example without thinking very deeply about it.
